Consanguinity

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001192

A relationship by blood or a common ancestry, as distinguished from a relationship by marriage (affinity). The degree of consanguinity measures the closeness of the blood relationship between two individuals, such as parent-child or siblings. State laws use these degrees to prohibit marriages between closely related persons, to determine the rightful heirs of an intestate estate, and to disqualify judges or jurors from a case due to potential bias.
