The act of revealing information that was previously unknown or confidential, as required by law or by the rules of a legal proceeding. In civil litigation, it is part of the discovery process where parties must provide relevant documents and facts to each other. Securities law, for example, mandates that public companies disclose financial data and material business developments to investors.
