Redaction

The process of obscuring or removing sensitive, privileged, or irrelevant information from a document before it is produced in discovery or otherwise disclosed. Parties in litigation use redaction to protect attorney-client communications, trade secrets, personal data, or other confidential material while still complying with their disclosure obligations. Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 5.2 specifies certain personal identifiers that must be redacted from court filings.
