Trade secret

Confidential business information that provides a company with a competitive advantage. This information can include a formula, practice, process, design, or compilation of data which is not publicly known and for which the owner takes reasonable steps to maintain secrecy. Unlike patents, trade secrets are protected for an unlimited duration as long as they remain confidential.
