The act of obtaining, collecting, or transmitting information considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information, for the benefit of another government, corporation, or group. This practice involves spying or using spies to gather intelligence related to national defense or proprietary trade secrets. In the United States, criminal espionage is primarily prosecuted under the Espionage Act of 1917.
