Economic espionage

The unlawful and clandestine appropriation of trade secrets or proprietary economic information for the benefit of a foreign government, foreign instrumentality, or foreign agent. This offense involves theft of intellectual property, such as formulas, designs, or research, with the intent to injure the owner and benefit a foreign entity. The Economic Espionage Act of 1996 criminalizes such acts in the United States.
