Dram shop rule

A body of law that holds establishments that serve alcoholic beverages, such as bars and restaurants, liable for damages caused by their intoxicated patrons. If an establishment serves alcohol to an obviously intoxicated person who then causes injury or death to a third party, the establishment may be held responsible. These laws vary significantly by state.
