Closed shop
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001023
A form of union security agreement where an employer agrees to hire only union members. This arrangement requires employees to be members of the union as a condition of employment before they are hired. The Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 outlawed closed shops in the United States, though union shops, which require union membership after hiring, are still permitted in some states.
