Union shop

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005072

A form of union security agreement requiring all employees in a bargaining unit to become members of the union and pay dues as a condition of continued employment. New hires who are not union members at the time of employment must join the union within a specified period, often 30 days, after their start date. The legality of union shop agreements is restricted by so-called right-to-work laws in many states, which prohibit making union membership a condition of employment.
