Agency shop

A form of union security agreement where employees are not required to join the union, but they must pay union dues or a service fee as a condition of employment. This arrangement compensates the union for its collective bargaining efforts on behalf of all employees in the bargaining unit. The National Labor Relations Act governs the legality of agency shop agreements in the United States.
