Maintenance of membership

A provision in a collective bargaining agreement requiring employees who are members of the union on the contract's effective date, or who voluntarily join thereafter, to maintain their union membership for the duration of the agreement. This clause does not compel new employees to join the union. It is a less restrictive form of union security than a union shop agreement.
