Maintenance and cure

A fundamental right under maritime law entitling a seaman who becomes ill or injured while in the service of a vessel to receive payments for living expenses (maintenance) and medical care (cure) until maximum medical improvement is reached. This obligation is owed by the shipowner regardless of fault, unless the seaman's injury or illness was due to their own willful misconduct. It is a no-fault remedy distinct from negligence claims.
