Mainstreaming

The practice of integrating students with disabilities into general education classrooms for a portion of the school day, while providing specialized instruction and support in a separate setting for the remainder. This approach aims to provide students with disabilities access to the general curriculum and social interaction with their non-disabled peers. It is a component of the broader concept of the least restrictive environment under federal special education law.
