Least restrictive environment

A legal principle in special education that mandates students with disabilities be educated with non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate. This environment should be as close as possible to the general education setting while still meeting the student's individual needs. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires school districts to adhere to this principle.
