Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

A federal law requiring public schools to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to eligible children with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA, governs how states and public agencies offer early intervention, special education, and related services to millions of children from birth to age 21. For each qualifying student, the law mandates the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in collaboration with parents and school personnel.
