Major Crimes Act

A federal statute, 18 U.S.C. § 1153, that grants federal courts jurisdiction over certain serious crimes committed by Native Americans in Indian Country. This act specifies a list of offenses, such as murder, rape, and arson, for which federal law applies, rather than tribal or state law. It was originally enacted in 1885 to address jurisdictional complexities on reservations.
