Blind tiger

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005311

A place where alcoholic beverages are sold illegally, operating without the required licenses and evading alcohol control laws. These establishments came to prominence during the Prohibition era in the United States as a type of speakeasy. The term originated from a practice where customers would pay to see an attraction, such as a blind animal, and receive a 'complimentary' alcoholic drink, thus circumventing laws against the direct sale of liquor.
