Effective date

The specific calendar date on which a law, contract, regulation, or other legal instrument officially comes into force and begins to have legal effect. Prior to this date, the instrument may have been signed or enacted, but its provisions are not yet enforceable. For many statutes, the effective date is specified within the legislation itself or is a set period after its enactment.
