Exonerative fact

A fact that extinguishes an existing legal duty, so that the person who owed it is released from the obligation. Payment of a debt, a creditor's release, and full performance of a contract are typical examples. In the vocabulary of legal theory, it is a kind of divestitive fact, meaning a fact that brings a legal right or duty to an end.
