A privilege allowing certain individuals, such as government officials or members of legislative bodies, to send mail without payment of postage. This right is granted for official correspondence and is indicated by a special mark or signature on the envelope instead of a stamp. In the United States, the franking privilege is extended to members of Congress for official business.
