Governmental immunity

A legal doctrine that protects government entities from liability for certain torts or lawsuits, unless they have waived that immunity by statute. This protection is based on the principle of sovereign immunity, which historically held that the king could do no wrong. In the United States, the Federal Tort Claims Act partially waives federal governmental immunity.
