Lanham Act

A federal statute, codified at 15 U.S.C. section 1051 and following and enacted in 1946, that governs trademarks, service marks and unfair competition in interstate commerce. It sets up the federal registration system, provides civil remedies for infringement and dilution, and creates a cause of action for false advertising and false designation of origin under section 43(a). It operates alongside state trademark and unfair competition laws rather than displacing them.
