Limiting instructions

Directions given by a judge to a jury that restrict the purpose for which certain evidence may be considered. These instructions prevent the jury from using evidence for an improper or irrelevant purpose. For example, evidence admitted for impeachment purposes cannot be used as substantive proof of guilt.
