Mandatory joinder

A legal rule requiring certain parties to be included in a lawsuit because their absence would prevent the court from granting complete relief or would prejudice their interests or the interests of existing parties. Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 19 outlines the criteria for determining whether a party is necessary and indispensable. Failure to join such a party can lead to dismissal of the action.
