Mass layoff

A reduction in force that meets specific numerical thresholds, triggering certain legal obligations for employers. In the United States, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act defines a mass layoff as a reduction in force that results in an employment loss at a single site of employment for at least 33% of the employees and at least 50 employees, or at least 500 employees regardless of percentage. Employers are typically required to provide 60 days' advance written notice to affected employees.
