An official appointed by a court to assist in specific judicial functions, such as overseeing discovery, conducting hearings, or calculating damages. This individual, sometimes called a special master, reports findings and recommendations back to the judge. Their role is defined by the court order appointing them and can vary widely depending on the complexity of the case.
