Prosecutorial discretion

The authority of a government prosecuting attorney to decide whether to charge a person with a crime, what charges to file, and whether to dismiss or reduce charges. This power allows prosecutors to manage limited resources and pursue justice by considering the strength of evidence, the severity of the offense, and the suspect's history. The Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed this authority as a core function of the executive branch.
