Public administrator

A public official, appointed or elected under state or county law, who administers the estates of people who die without a will, or without any relative or other person willing and able to act. Once the court authorizes the role in a particular estate, the official collects assets, pays debts, and distributes what remains under the intestacy laws, subject to judicial oversight. The office exists in states such as New York, California, and Illinois, and holders are often county officers.
