Public trust doctrine

A legal principle asserting that certain natural resources, such as navigable waters and their submerged lands, are held by the government in trust for the benefit of the public. The government has a fiduciary duty to protect these resources for public use and enjoyment, including navigation, fishing, and recreation. This doctrine originated in Roman law and is recognized in many common law jurisdictions.
