Remittitur

A judicial order reducing the amount of a monetary award granted by a jury, typically when the award is deemed excessive. The court offers the plaintiff the choice of accepting the reduced amount or undergoing a new trial on the issue of damages. This power is exercised to prevent unjust enrichment or awards unsupported by evidence.
