The subject matter of a legal action, such as a piece of property or a sum of money, that is the object of a trust, estate, or lawsuit. In proceedings 'in rem' (against a thing), the court's jurisdiction is based on the presence of the res within its territory. The property held in a trust is referred to as the trust res or corpus.
