Revenue agent

An IRS employee who conducts field audits of the returns and books of businesses and higher-income individuals. The agent interviews taxpayers, examines records, and writes a report proposing adjustments, which the taxpayer may accept or contest through IRS Appeals or the U.S. Tax Court. Agents propose changes rather than assess tax, since assessment follows agreement or a final determination of the liability.
