Rule of doubt

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004370

A principle of statutory interpretation where, if a law is ambiguous or unclear, the court resolves the ambiguity in favor of the party against whom the law is being applied. This approach is particularly relevant in criminal law, where it favors the defendant. The rule reflects a preference for clarity in legal pronouncements and protects individuals from overly broad or vague statutes.
