Transinstitutionalization

The process by which individuals, often those with mental illness or developmental disabilities, are moved from one institutional setting to another, such as from state hospitals to nursing homes, jails, or homeless shelters. This phenomenon can occur despite efforts to promote community-based care. It raises concerns about the adequacy of support services in less restrictive environments.
