United Steelworkers of America v. Weber (1979)

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005095

A U.S. Supreme Court decision holding that a private employer's voluntary affirmative action plan was permissible. The plan, which reserved 50% of openings in a training program for Black employees, was challenged by a white employee with more seniority. The Court determined that the plan did not violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because it was a temporary measure designed to remedy manifest racial imbalances in traditionally segregated job categories.
