Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)

A landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation under the doctrine of 'separate but equal.' The ruling allowed states to maintain segregated facilities for Black and white citizens, provided the facilities were ostensibly equal. This decision provided legal justification for Jim Crow laws for over half a century until it was overturned by Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.
