Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU)

A standard unit of measurement for cargo capacity based on the volume of a 20-foot-long intermodal container. The twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) is used to quantify the carrying capacity of container ships, the number of containers handled at a port, and overall shipping volumes. A standard 40-foot container is equivalent to two TEUs.
