Container per diem

A daily charge levied by a shipping line or container owner when a container is held by a shipper or consignee beyond the agreed-upon free time. This fee compensates the owner for the use of their equipment and encourages prompt return of the container. It is similar to demurrage but applies to the container itself, not the port space.
