Aerial

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010347

A metallic device, also known as an antenna, designed for transmitting or receiving electromagnetic waves. In meteorology, aerials are integral components of remote sensing instruments like weather radar, wind profilers, and radiosonde tracking systems. The physical characteristics of the aerial, such as its shape, size, and orientation, determine its performance in terms of signal gain, directivity, and operating frequency.
