Airmass source region

A large, geographically uniform area where an air mass acquires its characteristic temperature and moisture properties by remaining stationary or moving slowly over the surface. Examples include polar ice caps, vast oceans, or large desert regions. The properties of an air mass are largely determined by the surface characteristics of its source region.
