Anelastic approximation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003497
A simplification used in atmospheric and oceanic modeling that filters out sound waves by assuming a non-divergent velocity field, while still allowing for density variations. This approximation is valid for flows where the Mach number is small and the time scales of interest are much longer than those of acoustic waves. It is commonly applied in models of deep convection and mesoscale atmospheric phenomena.
