Aperture

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003578

The opening in a meteorological instrument through which electromagnetic radiation enters and reaches the detector. The size of this opening governs the amount of energy collected by the sensor, affecting the instrument's sensitivity and signal strength. In contrast to the field of view, which describes the angular extent of the scene being observed, the aperture's physical diameter determines the light-gathering capacity of the instrument.
