Backward chaining
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003774
A reasoning method used in artificial intelligence and expert systems that starts from a potential conclusion or goal and works backward to find evidence or data that supports it. In a meteorological diagnostic system, it might be used to determine the atmospheric conditions that led to a specific observed event, such as a tornado, by recursively proving the sub-goals required for its formation. This contrasts with forward chaining, which reasons from known data to a conclusion.
