Banner cloud

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000273

  1. A stationary cloud formation that appears to stream downwind from a mountain peak, resembling a flag or banner. It forms when moist air is forced to rise over the mountain, cooling adiabatically and condensing into visible cloud droplets. The cloud remains localized to the lee side of the peak due to continuous condensation and evaporation processes.

  2. A cloud plume often observed to extend downwind behind isolated mountain peaks, even on otherwise cloud-free days.
