  1. A unit of pressure, commonly used in meteorology, defined as 100,000 Pascals (Pa) or 100 kilopascals (kPa). It is approximately equal to the average atmospheric pressure at sea level. The millibar (mb), which is one-thousandth of a bar, is more frequently used in weather reports and on weather maps.

  2. An obstacle formed at the shallow entrance to the mouth of a river or bay.
