Bathymeter
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003854
An instrument used for measuring the depth of a body of water, such as an ocean, sea, or lake. Modern bathymeters are typically echo sounders that operate by transmitting a sound pulse (a ping) from the surface and measuring the time it takes for the echo to return from the bottom. The depth is calculated based on the two-way travel time and the speed of sound in water.
