Bathythermograph
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003856
An oceanographic instrument designed to measure and record water temperature as a function of depth. It consists of a temperature sensor and a pressure sensor, which are lowered into the water from a ship. Early models produced a trace on a smoked glass slide, while modern versions transmit data electronically, often providing measurements down to several hundred meters.
