Blending height

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003947

The height above a heterogeneous surface at which the flow no longer varies horizontally with the individual patches of different roughness or temperature beneath it, so their effects have merged into one effective surface value. Below this level, wind profiles and fluxes follow the nearest patch. The concept lets land-surface and mesoscale models treat a mosaic of surface types as one effective surface, and the height is typically a small fraction of the horizontal size of the patches.
