Bragg scattering

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004012

The coherent backscattering of waves from a periodic spatial structure whose spacing is half the wavelength, so that the returns from successive layers add in phase. In radar meteorology it describes echoes from refractive index fluctuations in clear air at that scale, which wind profilers use to measure winds, and high-frequency ocean radars use the same effect with surface waves. Echoes from raindrops are instead Rayleigh scattering.
