Bubble bursting

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004058

The process by which a gas bubble at a liquid's surface ruptures, ejecting tiny droplets into the air. In ocean-atmosphere interactions, this mechanism at the sea surface is a primary source of sea salt aerosols, which act as cloud condensation nuclei. The process creates both film drops from the bubble's shattered cap and jet drops from the collapse of the bubble cavity.
